  1. This is like during the Great Leap Forward where people constantly lied about meeting larger and larger production quotas until the whole house of cards collapsed and **fifty million people** died of starvation. When you lie about a problem, no one is then able to fix the problem. Learn from your past mistakes, China. Don’t do this again.

  2. I wonder if the Chinese understand just how foolish they look when trotting out lies like this? It’s all about projected image, but it end up very similar to your child strongly denying playing with the paint when both the walls and themselves are covered in it.

  3. >”I don’t believe it. Are there no unemployed people in the province? No beggars?”

    Well, not anymore…

  4. This reminds me of the movie The Interview. Kim Jong-un does not pee or poop, he works so hard that it burns away from the inside. Lmao. I mean, what in the world..

  5. It’s actually not a lie. This is something that Serpentza and Laowhy discussed a while ago, China adjusted the threshold for being poor and made it so ridiculously low that barely anyone meets it.

So technically not a lie…Not saying it is good, but it isn’t a lie. And if you think Western governments don’t also use the same tactic, you might wanna think again. It is a lot easier to change/add to a definition than it is to solve a problem.

  6. Beggars are probably not categorised as people.

  7. I guess reddit will upvote any article with “China” in it lmao.

  8. “One man who stops lying can bring down a tyranny”- Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

  9. Imagine having only 17 people in poverty and saying fuck it, let them stay that way.

  10. Well, hell, the lies have to be impressive or it’s not worth the bother.

  11. Slightly a head of the UK on this. You have to register as being broke to get on the poverty list. Registration cost 500 quid per family member.

  12. in communist european countries everyone was employed or jailed, does it work the same in china?
