Moscow announced Tuesday that it had agreed with Ankara to work on settling the situation in Libya, while the internationally recognized government of reconciliation confirmed that it had adopted a comprehensive strategy to combat terrorism.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia and Turkey have agreed to continue joint work to settle the situation in Libya.
During a press conference in Sochi with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Lavrov stressed that Russia stands for a political settlement of the Libyan conflict through a dialogue in which all parties participate.
He said, “The situation in Libya is still critical, but there is a commitment to a ceasefire, and we must work to strengthen this calm through the support of the (5 + 5) military committee formed by the Libyan parties. Turkey and Russia are working together to support the political settlement.”
He added, “On the basis of the joint Turkish initiative, important meetings took place between the parties to the conflict, and we created the conditions for the Berlin conference to take place. Russia and Turkey continue to support the political track.”
He expressed his confidence in the possibility of reaching “a compromise solution between the reconciliation government and the Tobruk Parliament, through all parties sitting around the dialogue table.”
For his part, the deputy in the Presidency Council of the Government of National Accord, Ahmed Maiteq, affirmed the government’s continued support for the anti-terrorism force, which was established in a circumstance he described as extremely dangerous.
Maitiq emphasized that the reconciliation government adopts a comprehensive strategy to confront terrorism, which is not limited to the security and military dimensions only.
This came during the graduation of a new batch of those forces in the city of Khums (east of Tripoli), with the participation of the Minister of Defense and the Chief of Staff of the Government of National Accord.
In the same context, the Ministry of Interior of the Libyan Government of National Accord announced that Minister Fathi Bashagha met in Tripoli with the General Director of the Turkish company “Baykar” for Defense Industries, Khaluq Baykar, and discussed with him means of cooperation between the ministry and the company.
The Ministry of Interior added that the meeting discussed ways to benefit from the company’s expertise to raise the efficiency of the security work in the Ministry of Interior, and to ensure that it keeps pace with the latest methods and technologies in this field.
