After signs of revoking his objection to the defense budget, Trump attacks Republican leaders

US President Donald Trump strongly attacked the leaders of the Republican Party in Congress, while facing the possibility of revoking his objection to the defense budget in a precedent that would constitute a great embarrassment to him in the last days of his term.

From his holiday resort in Maralago, Florida, Trump, 74, tweeted that “the weak and tired leadership of the Republicans will allow the defense budget bill to pass.”

Trump said, “The act of cowardice, disgrace and complete submission by weak people in front of major technology companies.”

The outgoing president had objected to the draft defense budget for 2021 because of “Article 230”, which protects the legal status of social networks, which he accuses of being biased against him.

Addressing the Republicans, he added, “Negotiate a better bill or change your leaders now,” and stressed that “the Senate should not approve the defense budget bill before reforming it.”

Ignore my audience

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell ignored Trump’s tweets and set a date for Wednesday to vote to overturn the president’s objection to the defense budget bill.

But Senator Bernie Sanders lodged a procedural objection that could delay the vote until Friday.

Sanders and other Democrats had called on McConnell to hold a simultaneous vote to increase economic aid from $ 600 to $ 2,000, in a measure the House of Representatives approved Monday with a large majority and ultimately Trump’s endorsement.

Trump also attacked the leaders of the Republican Party for not supporting the allegations he makes without any evidence, in which he stresses that he won the November 3rd elections over Joe Biden.

The outgoing president tweeted, “We need to lead a new and vibrant republic,” adding, “Can you imagine if the Republicans had stolen the presidential election from the Democrats, the gates of hell would have been opened.”

“The republican leadership wants nothing but the path of least resistance,” he added. “Our leaders (certainly not me) are pathetic. They only know how to lose. Note: I contributed to a lot of Senators winning the election. I think they forgot,” Trump added.

Joint elections

Trump’s attack on the leadership of the Republican Party comes a week before a joint election in Georgia to win two seats in the Senate, in an entitlement that will determine the identity of the party that will have the majority in the House.

Trump is scheduled to visit the southern state on January 4 to campaign in support of Republican candidates David Purdue and Kelly Loeffler on the eve of the election day.

Georgia is the state of the Republic of belonging as a whole, but it voted narrowly for Biden in the presidential elections, in which Purdue and Loeffler are running a frenzied race with Democratic candidates John Usoff and Rafael Warnock.

On Monday, 322 MPs voted to 87 to override Trump’s objection to the $ 740 billion defense budget, including 109 Republicans.

It is expected that the vote on the bill will take place this week in the Republican Senate, where the text must be supported by two-thirds of the members to nullify the president’s objection.

In a statement issued after the vote, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi attacked Trump and considered his objection to the defense budget bill “reckless”, calling on him to put an end to his “chaos campaign”.
