  3. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-outbreak-could-be-feared-disease-x-says-world-health-organisation-adviser-11942356) reduced by 76%. (I’m a bot)

    > The coronavirus outbreak could be the feared "Disease X" that experts have warned about, according to a World Health Organisation adviser.

    > Prof Marion Koopmans, head of viroscience at Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam, said the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by coronavirus, is "Rapidly becoming the first true pandemic challenge that fits the Disease X category".

    > "Writing in the journal Cell, Prof Koopmans said:"Whether it will be contained or not, this outbreak is rapidly becoming the first true pandemic challenge that fits the Disease X category, listed to the WHO's priority list of diseases for which we need to prepare in our current globalised society.

  4. >Disease X represents the knowledge that a serious international epidemic could be caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease, and so the R&D Blueprint explicitly seeks to enable cross-cutting R&D preparedness that is also relevant for an unknown “Disease X” as far as possible)

So yes, I suppose it meets that description. No, that doesn’t actually mean anything.

“Previously unknown disease can also be called by a super spooky name! Panic!”

  5. A disease becoming a pandemic doesn’t necessarily mean a severe threat to humankind.

You can have a pandemic of a disease with a zero percent mortality rate.

All this is saying is that we might not be able to contain the spread. There is no reason to assume a global disaster (other than possibly financially) yet.

  6. This is ridiculous. By all accounts so far, this disease has a survival rate well over 90%…Some figures are as high as 97.5%…It seems to be quite contagious, but it’s not the end of the world.

Coverage and hype of this is virus has gone waay beyond over-the-top at this point.
