  1. > *In the short term, this judgment sets a legal precedent that reaffirms the right to protest and invalidates the arrests of those detained under the ban, many of whom will have claims for compensation from the police for their wrongful arrest and detention.*
    >
    > *But in the longer term, it offers little solace. While the law has dug us out of this particular hole, nitpicking through the courts won’t be enough to forestall the climate and ecological emergency.*
    >
    > *The government’s attitude to climate protest reflects its wider approach to legislating for the protection of the planet. Just as it has sought to dodge the difficult decisions and hide behind the police to unlawfully ban Extinction Rebellion’s protests, the government continues to dodge the trade-offs that are required to fight the climate crisis, hiding instead behind targets that lie six full parliaments away – as far off in the future as the Berlin Wall is in the past.*
    >
    > *Rather than shirking responsibilities until it ends up in court, the government needs to confront those trade-offs now to interrupt catastrophe. The emergency we face requires system change, not incremental tinkering with the status quo.*

  2. > *”The draconian ban on XR protests has rightly been ruled unlawful, but we need more than judges to fight the climate crisis”*

  3. It was decided on a narrow point. That it could not be enforced unless the officer responsible for enacting it was on the scene of the particular disorder. They can still sanction disorderly behaviour but not over a whole city.

  4. > London: Extinction Rebellion climate change activists have won a legal challenge in London’s High Court against a police-imposed blanket ban on protests during its ‘Autumn Uprising’ in the British capital during October.
    >
    > Therefore barring any Extinction Rebellion protest in London other than at Trafalgar Square was unlawful and would be quashed, it said.
    >
    > Extinction Rebellion blocked roads, targeted financial institutions, sprayed paint on the government’s Treasury and disrupted transport during two weeks of direct action.
    >
    > It aimed to force the government to transform the current economic model so that radical action can be taken against climate breakdown, biodiversity loss and the risk of social and ecological collapse.
    >
    > Police, however, said the protests were hugely disruptive to London and action planned on the London Underground posed a threat to the safety of customers and staff, according to the court ruling.
    >
    > Ellie Chowns, a Green member of the European Parliament who was arrested while the ban was in place, said the ruling defended the right to peaceful assembly and public protest.
    >
    > “The judgment in our favour shows that the police clearly overstepped the mark when they imposed a blanket ban on any XR [Extinction Rebellion] related protest,” she said.

  5. Ban was unfair. But they need to control the ways in which they protest. Stopping trains in the poorest part of London and stopping ambulances is trashy

  6. Good to see their right to protest is protected.

I particularly dislike the extinction rebellion cus of their scummy behavior (does more harm to the cause than good), but hopefully this scare will push them in the right direction so they stop disturbing the peace and instead focus on awareness.

  7. As a quick response to the point being made against XR: “how dare they prevent working class/poor people from getting the tube”, just a quick reminder — THE ENTIRE FABRIC OF SOCIETY AS WE KNOW IT IS GOING TO COLLAPSE WITHIN 50 YEARS UNLESS RADICAL CHANGES (ie the complete removal of the internal combustion engine, petroleum production and plastic industries from daily life) ARE MADE.

Society is geared towards people not challenging the status quo. The protesters are making the point that the status quo of just going to work and ignoring the impending encore to the Stone Age is not acceptable. It’s that simple.

In 30 years when it’s really REALLY too late to do anything about the fact that 8bn people are trying to live in the same two narrow bands of arable land on earth, none of your kids have vaccines and water is rationed out daily and you say “why didn’t anyone do something?”, hopefully you’ll remember complaining about being late on the Victoria line one time in 2019.

  8. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.smh.com.au/world/europe/extinction-rebellion-win-court-challenge-against-london-police-ban-20191106-p5384b.html) reduced by 73%. (I’m a bot)

  9. You can be pro environment without supporting Extinction Rebellion.

They have labelled themselves as Anarchist and anti Capitalist, two extreme left ideologies. One of the founders of Extinction Rebellion tried to crash drones into an airport.

  10. What’s with the glueing yourself to stuff?

  11. I don’t actually think this is all that good. Extinction Rebellion are basically just a bunch of dumbasses using climate change as an excuse to ‘protest’ and just cause obstruction. Them climbing on a train was a prime example of it. They yell about the climate, and then obstruct people from working, which is how we’re actually supposed to do something about it. I would rather they just fade into obscurity and let more reasonable people actually *do* something.

  12. XR makes me root for climate change.

  13. Yay, the dirty crusties get to carry on stinking up the place
