First Japanese tuna auctions in the new year

The Japanese regard holding the first tuna auction every year at the Toyosu Fishery Wholesale Market in Tokyo as a “favorable event,” as the price at which the better fish is sold turns into media headlines, as it is always remarkably high.

In the first introductory auction of this year on Tuesday morning, a huge bluefin tuna was sold for 20.8 million yen (202,000 dollars), a price much lower than in previous years as the restaurant industry is struggling under the constraints of the coronavirus pandemic.
