  1. My uncle bought one of the 2019 (?) V8 Commodores because the guy at the dealership told him it would be the “last V8 Holden will ever make”. Apparently that was enough to make him drop like 100k on the spot.

For the last year we’ve all been making fun of him for falling for such a shitty FOMO tactic. Countless “last x I’ll ever make” jokes.

I’m catching up with him for dinner later this week, so I’m sure I’ll hear all about how wrong we were.

  2. Dale Jr. was going on about how interesting Holden was on a live broadcast from Daytona 2 days ago. His guest was a VP of performance from General Motors, who just would not contribute to the conversation, other than to say Holden had a great history in Australia.

Dale wanted him to bring Utes to the US, and the answer was basically never.

  3. What’s going to happen in “~~V8~~ SuperCars” I wonder. They’ll have to invent a new rivalry now that the traditional Ford vs Holden one must end.

  4. Truly the end of an era – looks like bogans will have to transition to driving exclusively Ford Falcons from now on.

  5. Good thing we propped up GM with millions in subsidies. Can we have those back?

  6. Holden ain’t the same when they closed the Australian factory.

They had a new Commodore but the Insignia ain’t a Commodore to me. No V8s or anything and is simply a midsize car like the Malibu. They axed the car pretty fast and so with the actual death of the Commodore, became the death of the brand.

  7. You know what Australia has Plenty of Lithium, Aluminium and steel>

Federal Government gave GM a $2billion dollar bailout package. That should have come with the condition it be used to develop a local EV industry.

that, to my mind, would have solved the failure to innovate problem and taken advantage of a big economic potential Australia has.

We should be at the forefront of EV Manufacturing.

  8. To be honest anything after HQ was junk anyway.

  9. And in all of these comments no one’s mentioned joe jockey who started this demise by dating them to leave Australia. Just a hint, why do people think golden only told the government an hour before they made their announcement? Because they’re still pissed with the treatment the government showed them.

  10. Yeesh, we live in interesting times. Sorry, bogans and kiwis; looks like we Americans are ruining more of the world today.

At least y’all get access to sweet, sweet jdm imports.

  11. Interesting, given that all New Zealand police cars are Holden that must be a pretty big contract up for grabs.

  12. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.sbs.com.au/news/gm-to-scrap-holden-brand-in-australia-and-new-zealand) reduced by 72%. (I’m a bot)

    > After closing the company's local manufacturing operations in 2017, GM said it had taken the "Difficult" decision to retire the brand from sales in both Australia and New Zealand after considering numerous options to revive Holden's flagging sales.

    > "After comprehensive assessment, we regret that we could not prioritise the investment required for Holden to be successful for the long term in Australia and New Zealand, over all other considerations we have globally.”

    > "Holden will always have a special place in the development of our countries. As Australia and New Zealand grew, Holden was a part of the engine room fuelling that development," he said.

  13. But, they’re going to bring back the Oldsmobile…

  14. GM has just given away any market share in this territory that it has. The Japanese and Chinese will meet our needs now.

  15. GM is doing a pretty big re-shuffle of their business model. They’re going to be focusing more on public transport, ride-sharing and autonomous driving. This was the reason they pulled out of India and Europe too.

  16. TIL GM has a brand called Holden.

  17. The headline should be, “General Motors to end all right steering wheel vehicles, leaving the Australian, NZ and SEA markets.” As an American I sincerely hope they don’t come back here asking for a bailout, no one in this country wants their shit cars.

  18. not surprising assuming those are just the Kiwi versions of soon to be discontinued American cars

And now they will Steal our secrets by re launching a El Camino, only for the LHD market, with a LS based engine, in 2021 or something. ! And it will sell like hotcakes!

And to rub salt in the wound they will call it the El Camino “ute”
