Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta said that he feels pain due to Mesut Ozil’s position in the English club, but he refuses to address questions about the German player after every defeat suffered by the team, which fluctuates in level and results.
Ozil, 32, has a contract with Arsenal until June 2021, and reports stated that he earns 350,000 pounds (about $ 452,000) per week, but he did not participate with Arteta’s team after he was excluded from the 25-man league squad.
The playmaker, who last featured for Arsenal in March, is out of the club’s squad in the European League, so he can only play with the club’s under-23 team.
“I feel pain, because I do not like having any player in my squad who does not have the opportunity to play or compete, and for me this is sad because I think no one deserves it,” Arteta said in an interview with beIN Sports.
The Spanish coach added, “But at the end of the day, I am here to make decisions, and I will make decisions, which in my view will be the best in the interest of this club, and this is what I must do.”
Talk of Ozil’s absence is frequently reported, but Arteta said he does not want to answer the repeated questions about this.
“When we lose football matches, his name appears, and when we win it does not happen,” Arteta said.
Arsenal are 11th in the league, 6 points behind leaders Leicester, and will play Leeds United next Sunday.
