  1. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.bbc.com/news/amp/world-asia-50571017) reduced by 76%. (I’m a bot)

    > Science Photo Library The world's first sperm bank for HIV-positive donors has launched in New Zealand, aiming to fight stigma surrounding the illness.

    > Body Positive, the New Zealand Aids Foundation and Positive Women Inc hope the project will educate the public about transmission of HIV, and reduce stigma for those who have the illness.

    > The sperm bank says it will make clear that all donors are HIV positive but on successful treatment that prevents them passing on the virus.

  2. Honestly the fact I live in New Zealand and have no clue this was a thing tells you how well the campaign worked

  3. I don’t want kids but if I did and needed a sperm bank this one would be a hard pass.

  4. In the US, most sperm banks won’t accept men who are a little below average height.

They exclude people for being slightly below average height, which is a LOT of the population.

I’m not following the logic train any further, as it relates to the article.

  5. Why would you go through that amount of trouble for this??? Plenty of *regular* donors, correct?

  6. Finally HIV positive people can cum in a cup without being judged

  7. Honestly, I have nothing against this but it doesn’t seem like it would be very effective simply because of supply and demand. There are plenty of guys without HIV willing to Jack off into a cup for a fee, heck I know some who would do it for free. It can be stored for a very long time and a single person could donate multiple times a week so it just seems like to me there a lot of other options that have no exposure to HIV involved. It’s awesome that they’ve done it, but I just don’t see the real world application yet.

If they were doing things like helping HIV positive people have their own children or taking egg donations that would be interesting, but it doesn’t seem like that’s currently the case.

  8. I can see this being WILDLY unpopular

  9. Given that you’re barred from donating to sperm banks if they don’t think your hair color/economic class/etc. is desirable, I don’t see this as a meaningful step towards making sperm banks “fair”.

  10. I had to check that this wasn’t an onion article.

  11. W.. T.. F..

So when do we open the hepatitis positive blood-bank, or the Syphilis positive blood-bank.

Of course there is a stigma! It’s a preventable biologic disease!

  12. Meanwhile in California intentionally transmitting HIV has been decriminalized. Normalizing life threatening diseases is not okay and should be opposed by any reasonable society.

  13. Ok this is actually dumb as fuck.

  14. I’m not just sure, I’m HIV positive

  15. Beep boop, I’m a bot. It looks like OP posted a Google AMP link. Google AMP pages often load faster, but AMP is a [major threat to the Open Web](https://www.socpub.com/articles/chris-graham-why-google-amp-threat-open-web-15847) and [your privacy](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/c88zm3/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot).

  16. According to a second long Google search: ” **HIV** is spread only in certain body fluids from a person who has **HIV**. These fluids are blood, **semen**, **pre-seminal fluids**, rectal fluids, vaginal fluids, and **breast milk**. In the United States, **HIV** is spread mainly by having sex or sharing injection drug equipment, such as needles, with someone who has **HIV**.”

The viral load in the semen is so small that it is undetectable, but it is definitely there.

Why even debate whether this is a good/bad thing? This is disastrously retarded and deranged. HIV positive people who want to have a baby born with HIV can use healthy sperm. You don’t launch a HIV positive sperm bank with the risk of an epidemic. You **contain** the virus, you **don’t** make it **more** accessible.

  17. How stupid can people be? this stupid.

  18. Dude, this has gotta be the STUPIDEST thing to EVER come out of PC culture. Are you fucking kidding me? HIV positive sperm donors? You’re a fucking idiot if you go to this place as well as just an awful fucking person for trying to bring a baby into this world who will have a chance of contracting HIV just because you want to be progressive.

    Go fuck yourself

  19. You have a 0 percent chance of being bitten by a shark on your couch. You have a .001% chance of being bitten by a shark in the ocean. Move your couch to the ocean to prove how little threat sharks are.

  20. The absolute state. Jesus fuck. They have fucking lost it.

  21. Pretty sure all those cups go directly into an incinerator.

  22. Yes but still why would you do that

  23. It’s the only positive thing in my life.

  24. What a stupid, first world approach to a serious issue.

Like holy crap, no one is pressuring governments to cut patents for HIV drugs so they can help people suffering globally, but instead they’re opening up a weird clinic to pass around “treated HIV sperm”?

What kind of fucking world do we live in?! Do people treat this shit like a poisonous puffer fish or Russian roulette? Like hey, I might give birth to an HIV infected baby if the treatment didn’t work for some reason.

  25. this is so dumb, as someone has said in this thread it is 2 risky.

  26. So they want to make babies born with HIV? I’m either confused or is this some kind of sick joke?

  27. Somebody needs to check on NZ

  28. And people say the LGBT community doesn’t have an agenda.

  29. I don’t get it? Anyone got an eli5 for what this sperm bank is for?

  30. This makes life simpler for bug chasers.
