The Palestine Liberation Organization announced, on Saturday, that the Israeli government agreed to build 12,159 settlement units in the West Bank during the current year, which is a record for its construction since 2012.
This came in a report issued by the National Office for Defense of Land and Resistance to Settlement (affiliated with the PLO).
The report indicated that the Israeli authorities approved last Thursday a plan to build 3,212 new settlement units in separate parts of the occupied West Bank.
He added, “This approval came one month after the signing of the two agreements to normalize relations with the UAE and Bahrain under US sponsorship in mid-September.”
And he added, “This is a challenge to international law and resolutions of international legitimacy, and an unlimited disregard for the stance of the international community, and a public investment of normalization agreements.”
On September 15, the UAE and Bahrain signed two normalization agreements with Israel at the White House, ignoring the state of anger in Arab popular circles and the Palestinian rejection.
And while Abu Dhabi and Manama stated that normalization was in return for stopping the plan to annex 30% of the West Bank, as proposed by the American peace plan, known in the media as the US “deal of the century.” Israeli officials denied this, stressing that the annexation plan was not canceled, but rather only postponed.
The report referred to the recent approval by the Israeli authorities of many informal settlements (outposts).
And he added, “In the largest operation of theft and piracy of Palestinian lands, Israel seized more than 11 thousand dunums in the Palestinian valleys for the benefit of so-called nature reserves.
The report also quoted the Israeli non-governmental organization Peace Now, which opposes settlements, as saying that (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu is moving forward with full force towards consolidating the actual annexation of the West Bank.
The Israeli organization indicated that an additional number of settlement units may be approved before the end of the year, according to the same source.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Israel approved the construction of 4,948 new settlement units on the occupied Palestinian territories, in the West Bank, in the largest settlement operation since the beginning of this year.
On Thursday, 3 Israeli military decisions were issued to annex 11,000 dunams (a dunam equals a thousand square meters) of Jordan Valley lands, according to statements made to Anadolu Agency, Qassem Awad, Director General of Documenting Israel’s Violations in the Palestinian Resistance to Wall and Settlement Organization.
Yesterday, European powers condemned Israel’s decision to approve building thousands of new settlement units in the occupied West Bank, noting that the move would lead to “counterproductive” and undermine peace efforts in the region.
A joint statement – issued by the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Spain – said, “The expansion of settlements constitutes a violation of international law and threatens, to an additional degree, the viability of reaching a two-state solution aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”
