Italy confirms the killing of its ambassador in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in an armed attack

The Italian Foreign Ministry confirmed today, Sunday, that Luca Atanazio, its ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, had died of his wounds, following an armed attack on a United Nations convoy near the Goma region, east of the African country.

Reuters reported that the ambassador and a member of the Italian military police were killed in the attack during an attack on the convoy of the World Food Program, during a visit near the Goma region, which is known for many unrest.

The French Press Agency quoted a Congolese army spokesman as saying that two other people were killed in the attack, without identifying them, and journalists and local media in the Congo broadcast pictures showing the moment the Italian ambassador was injured.
