  1. He should’ve just pledged to protect the entire Amazon, that way any search for “Jeff Bezos owns Amazon” will bring good links to the front page

  2. This is like Lex Luthor creating a fund to repair damages caused by Lex Luthor.

  3. Jeff Bezos is becoming Gavin Belson from Silicon Valley.

  4. He could get more bang for his buck using that money to lobby politicians. Get them to pass carbon tax and trade policies for example. Then his company and others can be incentivized not to pollute, rather than having to make continual charitable donations to ease public relations and their guilty consciences.

  5. If my math is correct that’s about 31 dollars a person in the U.S.

  6. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.npr.org/2020/02/17/806720144/jeff-bezos-pledges-10-billion-to-fight-climate-change-planets-biggest-threat) reduced by 78%. (I’m a bot)

    > Jeff Bezos Pledges $10 Billion To Fight Climate Change, Planet's 'Biggest Threat' Amazon, the company Bezos founded and heads, has come under increasing scrutiny for its own carbon footprint.

    > February 17, 2020.5:30 PM ET. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced Monday he is committing $10 billion to fight climate change, which he calls "The biggest threat to our planet.”

    > In April, thousands of Amazon workers signed an open letter to Bezos and Amazon's board of directors, calling on them to end contracts with oil and gas companies, halt donations to climate change-denying lawmakers and setting measurable goals.

  7. What the fuck, comment section?

    This is a _good thing_.

  8. The second biggest threat is billionaires, he’s just taking out the competition.

  9. If he had invested 10bil into carbon capture or something, I’d be happier. As it stands, we have NFI where this is going and I struggle to imagine this will actually have any significant impact. That’s not of any fault of Bezos, but just how dire the situation is as I understand it. We need a hugely dramatic answer to this issue and donating bits of money to random NGOs isn’t going to do anything to solve the problem.

You know, like, I see it similar to all these global charities such as World Vision. Have they defeated poverty? No. Have they helped people? Yes. Can I point to any of it? No. Are all these countries still struggling? Yes.

See what I mean? It’s hard to get excited for this as it really sounds like the 10bil will just be diluted into all these avenues and it’s impact won’t be felt.

  10. Ok perfect, and now support a candidate that will also push for climate change action.

  11. Guy puts the equivalent of half of NASA’s budget toward fighting climate change and the comments are full of less effective people complaining. Incredible.

  12. Maybe he should just pay his fucking taxes on all that stupid money and then we’d solve a lot of problems.

  13. Great.

That is about 0.00025 % of what it will cost to reverse global warming.

    But, it’s a start.

Whoops – it’s philanthropy – so none of it is actually going to reverse global warming.

But, maybe some research money on better wind power turbines and solar power panels – which is good.

    [Edit: not windmills, wind turbines]

  14. It’s 5x Trump’s net worth and 1/5th of Bloomberg’s.

  15. But pledges 11 billion to cause it.

  16. This just in: Planet’s second biggest threat declares war on planet ‘s biggest threat

  17. $10 billion spent on saving the world = $100 Billion on additional yearly income.

  18. I don’t think Jeff realizes he is one of the biggest threats…

  19. Funny, I thought the planet’s biggest threat came from rich capitalists like Jeff. After all, rampant exploitation of resources to generate massive profits is what got us to this point.

  20. That’d be cool if he paid his taxes, too.

  21. Maybe this will get people to forget about all of his unpaid taxes.

  22. This is really nice n all, but what about paying his tax?

  23. Like buying someone tent after you set their house on fire.

  24. Amazon is one of the world’s biggest threats

That being said. It is still WAYYYY more than the average hyper rich does. So good for him.

  25. Just a reminder that this could have been 10 billion tax dollars to be managed and held accountable by multiple people instead of one rich asshole contributing to the housong crisis but Amazon doesn’t pay taxes and the US civili an populace is obsessed with microfascists they think will fix all their problems.

  26. inb4 “yeah, but it’s only x% of his net worth!” and “if you make $60k, that’s like buying a coffee!”

  27. He should just pledge to pay his employees more and commit to making sure Amazon leads businesses in negative-carbon activities.

    Fuck his $10B.

  28. Fucking reddit. Denigrating a $10 billion pledge and equating this with our current fucktard president. Oh yeah, Bloomberg committed $500 million to climate change last June. But he’s just as bad as Trump.

  29. Yeah okay dope. But make sure to line out what the money will actually go to.

  30. What’s the difference between pledge and giving? Is pledge like: I might give money while giving: I will give money?

  31. Planet’s biggest threat are people, while climate change is biggest threat to us,its like fever trying to kill virus(us)

  32. Well, if $10 billion won’t fix it, nothing will.
