US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in an interview with “Fox News” that President Donald Trump’s administration considered from the beginning the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi horrific and tragic, and called on Saudi Arabia to take action against the perpetrators.
Pompeo indicated that Washington wants to make sure that the investigation into Khashoggi’s killing is complete and comprehensive, and we will continue to press for that.
We called on Saudi Arabia to take action against the perpetrators of the Khashoggi murder, and people were imprisoned as a result of their participation in this.
Position and clarification
For his part, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that there is no position on Turkey towards the Saudi state or the Saudi people, and that its position is against the perpetrators of Khashoggi’s crime.
In statements to the Anadolu Agency, Cavusoglu explained that there are no problems between Saudi Arabia and Turkey, and they should not be, and that Saudi Arabia and Turkey must work together in order to achieve the demands and hopes of the Islamic world.
He stressed that his country had not shown any hostility to Saudi Arabia during the past period, and that his country’s position was very clear after the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
In this regard, he affirmed that our position is not against the Saudi administration and people. It is because of the Khashoggi killers, and the failure to deliver them to justice, and there is no other issue.
A horrific crime
Khashoggi was killed on October 2, 2018, inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, in a case that shook international public opinion, with accusations denied by Riyadh that it was Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who issued the order to assassinate him.
Last July, a Turkish court decided to hold the second session of the trial of Khashoggi’s killers on November 24, after approval of an indictment filed by Khashoggi’s fiancée Hatice Cengiz, affecting 20 Saudis on charges including brutal torture, murder and incitement.
