Macron calls for Rouhani to take clear initiatives to revive the nuclear deal and brandishes a decision against Tehran at “atomic energy”

In the past few days, Iran has intensified its violations of the nuclear agreement, apparently in an effort to pressure US President Joe Biden.

French President Emmanuel Macron asked his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani to present clear initiatives to revive the Iranian nuclear deal, and Paris announced that it and its European allies would present a draft resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency condemning Iran’s suspension of some inspections related to its nuclear program.

The Elysee Palace said that Macron stressed, in a call with Rouhani, the importance of Tehran taking clear initiatives and without delay in order to allow the opportunity to resume dialogue with all the parties that signed the Vienna Agreement, which is the name of the Iran nuclear agreement concluded in 2015.

The French President expressed to his Iranian counterpart his deep concern about Iranian decisions, which he said violated the provisions of the Vienna Agreement, referring to Tehran’s recent decisions to reduce its obligations stipulated in the nuclear agreement in response to Washington’s withdrawal from the agreement and its tightening of sanctions on Iran.

In the past few days, Iran has intensified its violations of the nuclear agreement, apparently in an effort to put pressure on US President Joe Biden, in light of each party’s insistence that the other take the first step to revive the agreement.

Iranian refusal

On Sunday, Iran ruled out an informal meeting with the United States and European powers to discuss ways to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, and insisted that Washington lift all its unilateral sanctions, while the White House said it was “disappointed” with the Iranian position.

Iranian media quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh as saying, “Given the recent measures and statements of the United States and 3 European countries, Iran does not consider this the right time to hold an informal meeting with these countries, which was suggested by the European Union foreign policy official.” .

Multiple Iranian media outlets said that Rouhani had made clear to Macron that the only way to revive the agreement was for the United States to lift sanctions first, and reiterated that Tehran’s decision to reduce its commitments was caused by the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018.

Energy Agency

The Iranian presidency said that Rouhani stressed during the call that any non-constructive measure or position at the meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency would complicate the situation.

Rouhani’s warning comes after France announced that European countries would submit a draft resolution to the International Atomic Energy Agency condemning Tehran’s suspension of some inspections related to its nuclear activities.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in a speech in his country’s parliament that Iran’s measures to evade its obligations stipulated in the nuclear agreement will force European countries in the coming days to protest within the framework of the agency’s governing board.

The French Press Agency reported that diplomatic sources said that Germany, France and Britain, which are the three European countries participating in the nuclear deal, intend to submit to the vote on Friday the state’s governing council a text calling on Iran to “immediately resume” the entire inspection program stipulated in the agreement.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, said that the activities of IAEA inspectors in Iran’s nuclear facilities should not be a bargaining chip in the negotiations, and Grossi made clear that abandoning the additional protocol is a great loss because it limits the freedom of the agency’s inspectors.
