  1. Catholic church is deconstructing itself more and more. Less people take the shit from either religions and that is a hell of good decision.

  2. We had a married Catholic priest growing up. He became Catholic after he was married, and had a letter from the pope allowing him to be a married priest. His son ended up being my 6th grade religion teacher (catholic school)

  3. One imagines there was a lot of pressure on the Pontiff from the conservative wing of the Curia (government of the Vatican), in particular as the disgraced former Pope Benedict (Joseph Ratzinger) made a rare public statement (of sorts) attacking the proposal- https://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/religion-and-beliefs/former-pope-benedict-warns-francis-against-ordaining-married-men-1.4138338

It is, nonetheless, a shame to see this decision. If the Church is going to continue to survive, it needs to be able to adapt to the modern world (and the reality of a post-child sex abuse scandal ethos). One of the ways it could have done that would have been to allow this proposal.

That said, I am also not unsympathetic to Church orthodoxy on the issue (as I think that form of celibacy, coupled with a life sans temporal connections, allows priests to serve in furtherance of universal ideals absence the pull of their individual inclinations).

A tough issue all around, but still a bad decision to reject this proposal imo.

  4. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/482710-pope-declines-proposal-for-married-priests) reduced by 55%. (I’m a bot)

    > While deacons, like priests, are currently able to preach, perform baptisms and run parishes, only priests can say Mass, meaning nearly 90 percent of villages in the region do not have access to weekly liturgy.

    > Francis did not mention the proposal by name in his Wednesday Apostolic Exhortation, but addressed the priest shortage by urging expanded powers for lay people and permanent deacons, saying the Amazon needs "Many more," and the Vatican must find new incentives for priests to work in the region.

  5. Still OK with pedophile priests.

The Catholic church is morally bankrupt. They should have their tax-exempt status revoked, and be placed on sex-offender lists in every town that has a Catholic church.

  6. “Pope declines proposal” is a good headline lol

  7. i am tossed up about this. on one hand, it shows that one of the most influental organizations in history is not developing as fast as the world is (surprise surprise); otoh, the last thing the world needs is more priests.

  8. I can never understand the need to have an invisible wizard in the sky in my life… Bizarre.

  9. Just imagine living in a progressive world. But then again, we have the almighty powers of religion and tradidion.

  10. Pope misses chance to join the 21st century; decreases relevance of Catholicism worldwide.

  11. Good god religion is retarded. Seriously, let them marry and if god comes down and gets fussy then change it back. I am willing to bet literally anything he wont do shit. Like normal.

  12. ” … **threw cold water on a proposal to allow the ordination of some married men to become priests in the Amazon region amid a shortage there”**

Don’t worry about the shortage. We have a bunch of pedophile priests kicked out by other countries. Let give them new identities and send them to Amazon.

  13. Great news! Church is killing itself more than any outside source. I can’t wait for the day when the last priest will die off.
