  1. I’ll be the first to admit that a country is more than its population, but this seems totally in line with my (limited) exposure to Portugal. After spending a few weeks there, I don’t think I encountered a single person who wasn’t absolutely lovely.

Super cool to see another government deciding to be kind, and clinical. Keep it up!

  2. > All foreigners in Portugal with pending applications will be treated as permanent residents from Monday until at least July 1, authorities said on Saturday, to ensure migrants have access to public services during the coronavirus outbreak.

    > Applicants including asylum seekers need only provide evidence of an ongoing request to qualify – granting them access to the national health service, welfare benefits, bank accounts, and work and rental contracts.

    > “People should not be deprived of their rights to health and public service just because their application has not yet been processed,” Claudia Veloso, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, told Reuters. “In these exceptional times, the rights of migrants must be guaranteed.”

A nation recognizing human rights, nice.

    > The policy also aims to reduce contagion risk by minimising contact between border control service staff and applicants

    Win-win.

  4. Honestly these sorts of news tidbits are like breaths of fresh air in a quagmire of accusatory, blame game political news.

    Rock on Portugal

  5. To be precise (because most people only read titles), all migrants and asylum seekers with pending permanent residency requests will have all the benefits of permanent residents until July 1.

  6. “20 NGOs that assist migrants & refugees wrote to the government a joint letter saying the Covid-19 outbreak was putting people in the asylum system and without status at risk. The government has said, we see your point and we’ll give them equal rights.”
