  1. This is kind of a dumb use of polling. Japan’s population is roughly 125 million and only 36.7% of that is interested in attending a live Olympic event. So only an estimated 45 million want to attend live events… That doesn’t seem like a low level of interest.

  2. Most the Japanese people I talked to when I was there in December didn’t want to be anywhere near the Olympics, even before the virus started. I do know one couple who is going to a match and they had to enter drawings for every event they want to see. So even if you want to go you’re not guaranteed to get a ticket

  3. The Olympics is shit. Corrupt committee, cheating athletes, economic idiocy… why would I ever care about it?

  4. Given how the Japanese government has been handling the outbreak I doubt anyone has much confidence in going now.

  5. If the Olympics were in say, Austin, and a survey asked a sample of Americans in the country of they would go to Austin to attend live events, would it show similar results?

  6. I live in Japan and most of my colleagues at work applied for tickets and very, very few were successful. Meanwhile, travel agencies are selling packages for preliminary games (2 or 3 games, 2 nights in a hotel) for upwards of $3,000~$5000 per ticket and selling out immediately. So there’s that…

  7. Lots of Olympic hate here. But I went to the London olympics in 2012 and it was to this day the coolest sporting event I’ve ever been to. And I go to lots of sports.

The ticket system was a pain. Relatives living in London entered a lottery for tickets and received a couple and gave us two events. The woman’s soccer final. And a kayak race. Both were sports I previously cared nothing about. The women’s match ended up being USA vs japan. So that became far more exciting with USA playing for gold being an America. The match was awesome and the medal ceremony was super cool.

We tried to scalp tickets to the track and field events but it was impossible. We were offering 10x face value and people just laughed at us. Most had travelled from all over the world to watch live and had no interest in selling even for hundred of pounds. But it ended up not mattering because London has pubs everywhere and all the events were constantly on. You could look up which ever nationality you wanted and find fan club hotels and bars to go watch. We went to the Aussie bar for events favoured by aussies and the French area for jujitsu. The whole two weeks was super fun.

Japan will probably be the same with the main detractors being it will be too hot and all the athletes are doped up. But there are so many events and it’s such a fun spectacle that all that doesn’t really matter. If I wasn’t working all summer this year I would have bought tickets and rented a tiny apartment in a heart beat.

Who cares what some silly poll 5 months before the event says. Come summer time it will be one of the most fun places on earth for two to three weeks.

  8. I’ve seen people who spend their savings into going across the world to be a couple of days in the Olympics.

  9. Other than select events and rounds the stands at the Olympic games have largely been empty for years.

  10. Japanese government is shady. They only tested 9 people for corona and 7 were positive so they can keep the number low which is not right.. On the other hand South Korea tested 6000 people. I understand that olympic is important but they will eventually spread this disease to everywhere as they don’t even test people

  11. Thought they’d be more worried about the prospect of the Olympic stadium (not to mention most of Neo Tokyo) getting destroyed in a massive explosion of psychic energy before they’d even kicked off…

  12. it’s going to be hella crowded in a city where overcrowding on transportation is already a big problem. also hot as heck, 30+ temps with high humidity. this year has already been warmer than usual so i can guess it’ll be even worse.

  13. It’s an Olympic year, and I have yet to hear anything from any outlet about being excited about the Olympics. NBC is heading towards ratings disaster!

  14. Realistically speaking, how feasible is it to postpone this shindig?

  15. I would be surprised if a majority in any country would be interested in attending events

  16. If such an event comes to my city(not that it will ever come), I will watch the event in HD TV rather than dealing with all crowd and watching it from some corner of the stadium.

  17. Everyone will be watching it at home. People may not be interested in going but in Japan people will sit at home and watch events together and cheer for the athletes.

  18. there was a report that saod tickets are sold out .

  19. Olympic is boring anyways. Gonna just watch clips on youtube

  20. Isn’t it usually foreign “elites” type people that attend anyway?

  21. Or not only corona… no one cares about corporate owned athletes and the fact that once it’s over all that stuff built for it will just rot and crumble from disuse

  22. Probably don’t want to take time off, crazy workaholics.

  23. Of course not, theres better things to do, like プリコネ

  24. Or those of us who live here are sick and tired of having the games shoved down our throats for the last 5 years.
