Former world number one Victoria Azarenka complained about bad weather at the French Open tennis “Roland Garros” on Sunday, in light of low temperatures and light rain during her first round match at the Roland Garros sand courts.
Belarusian Azarenka and rival Danka Kovinic were knocked off the field after the match was halted while Azarenka was runner-up to US Open champion 2-1 ahead.
The supervisors asked Azarenka to stay on the field until a decision was made regarding the resumption of the match, but she refused, saying, “No. The temperature is 8 degrees. I live in Florida and I am used to the hot weather.”
Kovinic, who is from Montenegro, said she did not want to wait in the stadium because it was already very cold.
Azarenka added, “It’s ridiculous. It’s so cold. Why should we sit here like ducks ?!”
The two players returned to the match after a 50-minute delay, and the Belarus player quickly broke her opponent’s service to consolidate her lead and resolve the confrontation 6-1, 6-2.
The French Open is usually held in May and June, but was postponed this year due to the Corona pandemic.
