Qatar News Agency reported that Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani received a phone call from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and a call from his American counterpart Anthony Blinken.
According to the agency itself, the Qatari foreign minister’s call to the Secretary-General of the United Nations discussed Doha’s role in reviving the nuclear agreement between Iran and the major powers.
She indicated that Guterres welcomed the statement of the Al-Ula summit in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, issued on January 5, 2021.
On Sunday, Iran ruled out an informal meeting with the United States and European powers to discuss ways to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, and insisted that Washington lift all its unilateral sanctions, while the White House said it was “disappointed” with the Iranian position.
Iranian media quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh as saying, “Given the recent measures and statements of the United States and 3 European countries, Iran does not consider this the right time to hold an informal meeting with these countries, which was suggested by the European Union foreign policy official.” .
The Qatari foreign minister also discussed with his US counterpart the bilateral relations between the two countries, and they discussed developments in Libya, Yemen, Iran, Iraq and the upcoming Palestinian elections.
