US Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden expected President Donald Trump to release “lies” and attack him personally in their first television debate on Tuesday, likening the Republican candidate to Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels.
“It will be difficult,” the former US Vice President admitted in an interview broadcast on MSNBC News.
“I expect direct attacks, the majority of which will be personal,” he added, speaking of the Republican president. “That’s all he is good at.”
Biden, a 77-year-old veteran of American politics, faces for the first time directly with the president, whose Democratic candidate pledged to defeat him at the end of a competition in which he raised the slogan of ridding the country of Donald Trump.
They will meet in two other debates as well, before the elections scheduled for November 3.
However, some Biden supporters – who was previously prone to lapses – fear that during these debates he will not be able to take on the Republican billionaire whose performance in the debates is aggressive.
Biden said that Trump “does not know how to discuss facts. He is not so smart,” adding that he “does not know much about foreign policy or domestic policy. He is not familiar with the details.”
That is why Biden thought that Trump would target him especially with “personal attacks and lies.”
Trump often criticizes his opponent’s inactivity, calling him “the sleepy atmosphere,” as if he is making fun of his old age.
Biden said that Trump “is kind of like Goebbels,” adding, “If you lie too long and repeat the lie over and over again, (the lie) becomes public information.”
“People know that the president is a liar,” he said, adding, “It will not be surprising, so I am ready to go to explain why I think he failed, and why I think my proposals will help the Americans and the American economy and enhance our security on the international stage.”
